Botox® is a neurotoxin that works by stopping nerve impulses from reaching the muscle, preventing contraction of the muscle and allowing them to relax. When injected directly into neuromuscular tissue, Botox® can be used as a treatment for TMJ, and it may help treat symptoms such as jaw tensions, headaches due to teeth grinding, and lockjaw in cases of severe stress.
Treatments are usually 10-30 minutes, with at least three injection sessions over the course of several months. The purpose of this treatment is to reteach the muscles of the jaw to relax. Botox® can be injected into the forehead, temple, jaw muscles, and other areas depending on your symptoms, such as the trapezius in the shoulders and back.
TMJ disorders (TMD) can also cause a clicking sound or grating sensation when opening your mouth or chewing. If there is no pain or limitation of movement associated with jaw clicking, you probably don’t have TMJ disorder, and the cause of TMD is unknown. Symptoms are believed to arise from problems with the muscles of your jaw or with the parts of the joint itself. Injury to your jaw, the joint, and the muscles of the head and neck, such as a heavy blow or whiplash, can also lead to TMD. Other causes include grinding or clenching of teeth, movement of the soft cushion or disc between the ball and socket of the joint, arthritis in the joint, and stress. These could cause your teeth to clench or your facial and jaw muscles to tighten.
Botox® is FDA-approved to treat chronic migraine headaches in adults. In 2011, the FDA approved Botox® as a frontline treatment for TMD. Botox® is a purified protein that has been used in medicine since the mid-1970s. It can be used to help those who suffer from chronic migraines, which are defined as severe neurological disorders characterized by patients with a history of migraines who suffer from headaches on 15 or more days per month, with headaches lasting 4 hours a day or longer.
Treatment typically involves 31 injections in 7 key areas of the head and neck. Injected into shallow muscles, a very small needle is used. Treatments are needed once every 12 weeks to prevent chronic migraines. This is a preventative treatment that needs to be maintained for continued benefit.
PDO Thread Lifts are dissolvable sutures that improve collagen production in the skin after a series of treatments, leaving the treated areas smoother, with more elasticity, and the results have greater longevity.
We take great pride in ongoing advanced aesthetic treatments and filler training. We stay up to date on the safest procedures and current filler techniques. Why do we think this is important? Because we want to give you safe, ethical, and natural results.
